Advanced Institute

Writing Our Communities

Dates | Eligibility | Application

The Advanced Institute gives participants an opportunity to continue their work in a setting very much like Summer Institute. Participants in the 2008 “Writing Our Communities” Advanced Institute will engage in conversation, research, and writing about the history and culture of our communities.

Missouri State University and the College of Arts and Letters houses the Ozarks Studies Institute which "seeks to preserve the heritage of the Ozarks, its culture, environment and history by fostering a comprehensive knowledge of Ozarks' peoples, places, characteristics and dynamics. The Institute promotes a sense of place for residents and visitors alike and serves as an educational resource by collecting existing and discovering new knowledge about the Ozarks and by providing access to that knowledge."

Three hours of graduate credit are required for participation (ENG 625). Enrollment is limited to ten 2007 and 2008 Fellows. The textbook Writing Our Communities: Local Learning and Public Culture, a modest stipend, and a special gift will be provided to participating Teacher Consultants.
